Report from Club Meeting 9th June 2025

A very busy evening this month with two new faces (Drew and Jack) who were inspired to come by the demonstrations at Rosemoor, and two returning ‘newbies’ (Teresa and Paul) who brought in an elaeagnus and a tea tree for advice.
In addition there was a good turnout of regulars which amounted to 18 of us in all, which meant Kev and me were kept pretty busy (Roy wasn’t able to be at the meeting due to work commitments).
We had a short chat about our display at ‘Bonsai by the Sea’ in Exmouth at the weekend. The show was a great success and our display looked very good, especially the new labels which we have the convenience of being able to print on site.
Of note at the meeting was a part developed silver birch which had a fabulous trunk, brought in by Nigel. He just keeps bringing in trees with huge potential!
It was also very encouraging to see Matt following the advice to cut off 90% of his larch. I am used to people being very reluctant to follow that kind of advice but the potential of the tree was clear to see once he had ‘bitten the bullet’.
I must admit that due to the melee of a busy meeting I can’t now remember what everyone brought in but I do know that Alan had an interesting spruce which would probably benefit from some of Jon’s know-how, and that Dave had a very simple but sweet tree, was it a cotoneaster or chinese elm?
I will not be around for the July meeting but Roy will be back, possibly with news of the proposed ‘Members WhatsApp group’ so that we can keep in touch between meetings, ask for and give advice, and generally keep everyone up to date.
